From Lisa: My mom is on the plane to India (via Heathrow), and I'm sitting by the fire with Laura here in Santa Cruz. We're feeling warm and cozy, and happy to think of my mom heading out on her journey. Today the whole family helped my mom finish packing and getting ready for the trip. Amey picked up lots of energy bars. Cynthia made my mom a pocket photo album of family and friends to bring on the trip. I did last minute photo copying and shopping. Laura ran errands, helped my mom pack, and made her lunch, and then she and my grandfather (Kirk) drove Sara to the SF airport. At around 3:30 p.m. those of us staying in Santa Cruz gave my mom the traditional family send-off (we waved white dishtowels in the air as she drove down the street and rounded the corner).
For the last several days Sara has been trying to find photos from when she lived in India (1966-68). This morning she uncovered a dusty box of old slides in the garage and much to our delight there were several great slides from India! We quickly made arrangements to get a handful of them scanned and printed, so Sara could take some photos back to the village where she used to live. Success!! I've uploaded 20 of the images to Flickr, and you can view them here.

Sara - these photos are astonishing and wonderful! I've never seen them before. What a miracle to find them again after all these years, and how amazing to realize that the children in these photos are now middle aged, and the adults are elderly. I can't wait to hear the reaction and stories when you show these photos in the communities where they were taken. Thinking of you all the time!
Sara - At last! Your Amazing Race has begun! It was so much fun to help with your send off--you looked so happy and excited as we exchanged our last waves and blown kissed though airport security. I wish you the best of adventure and discovery on this journey and know you will make the most of every minute. Orca and I will take good care of things here at home and send all our love. xx, Laura
